8 Tips for Exercising During Pregnancy

Exercise not only keeps the mom-to-be fit and healthy but also benefits the child’s life-long health.

Prenatal lifestyle expert, Amy Griffith, helps us dispel common fitness fears for moms-to-be

According to the University of Virginia School of Medicine, prenatal exercise has a distinct molecular consequence on the unborn child that essentially allows the child to be more fit. However, many women still have fears and misconceptions about prenatal exercise. To help moms-to-be (with no applicable medical complications), Amy Griffith – star of the Prenatal Yoga Workout DVD – offers eight tips for a happy and healthy nine months of pregnancy.

1. Start now

The benefits of exercise are endless; it aids in digestion, develops muscle tone, can help prevent gestational diabetes, and lowers blood pressure. Even if you haven’t had a structured routine before, you can still start now. Just be sure to begin with gentle forms of exercise. Even a simple activity such as walking is hugely beneficial, but you could even run, dance or strength train. Don’t be afraid to exercise well into your pregnancy, even as your due date approaches, as it can encourage the baby to move into proper position for birth. Whatever your choice of exercise, always listen to your body and do what feels right and safe.

2. Exercise to release endorphins

During a workout you release endorphins. This hormone can help boost mood, improve self-esteem, reduce anxiety, decrease stress and alleviate pain. It can also improve sleep – which is something you’ll definitely lack when your little one arrives!

3. Include ab exercises

You may not see them now, but pregnant women still have abs. Exercising your abs and core muscles will help prevent back and posture problems caused by your growing stomach. It can also reduce the risk of abdominal separation, which can lead to other physical ailments. Keeping these muscles toned and active will help them to return to their pre-pregnancy state sooner. Be sure to research the safest types of abdominal exercise for the various trimesters and execute them with proper form.
